Zellige Tiles FAQ

Zellige Tiles

Our glazed Zellige tiles are made using time-honoured techniques. Each tile begins with hand-kneaded clay, shaped by eye or pressed into a mould, then dried in the sun and fired in traditional kilns. Glazing is done in small batches, resulting in natural variation, texture, and luminous reflection. Irregular edges and tonal shifts are not imperfections—they’re the hallmark of true craftsmanship.

Handmade tiles offer depth, texture, and individuality that machine-made tiles can’t replicate. Each one is slightly different—alive with character and the mark of the maker. While machine-made tiles prioritise uniformity, handmade pieces bring warmth, emotion, and timeless beauty.

We don’t mass-produce. Every tile is crafted by hand or reclaimed from historic buildings, using traditional materials and methods. Each one carries a story—designed to bring authenticity, artistry, and depth to your space.

Yes—and that’s their beauty. Expect natural variation in tone, texture, and finish. These subtle differences reflect the artisanal process and give each installation a one-of-a-kind character.

Slightly. Small variations in size and shape can occur due to the natural drying process, adding to the authentic, hand-crafted appeal of Zellige tiles.

Sealing and Installation

Generally, no. Glazed tiles are non-porous. However, if your tiles feature exposed terracotta sections, those unglazed areas should be sealed to protect against staining.

We recommend using a breathable impregnating sealer such as Ecoprotec. Apply after the adhesive has dried and before grouting. Allow the first coat to cure overnight, then apply additional coats every two hours until the tile is fully saturated. Always seal before grouting to prevent pigment staining, and finish with one final coat after cleaning.

Allow at least 24 hours after the final coat before using the space to ensure full curing and lasting protection.

Care & Cleaning

Glazed tiles can simply be wiped with warm water or cleaned using a soft mop and pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads that could dull the surface.

No. Harsh cleaners can damage the glaze or affect sealants (where used). Always use mild, pH-neutral products.

Most glazed tiles don’t require resealing. If your tiles include exposed terracotta, reseal every 1–2 years to maintain protection.

Glazed sections won’t stain, but if any raw terracotta is exposed, use Ecoprotec’s specialist products for stain removal and protection.

Use felt pads under furniture and avoid dragging heavy objects. In high-traffic areas, rugs can help protect and soften wear.
