Terracotta Tiles FAQ

Terracotta Tiles

Handmade tiles offer a level of artistry and irregularity that machines can’t replicate. Each piece carries subtle variations in tone and texture, creating a surface rich with depth and warmth. While machine-made tiles offer precision, handmade terracotta brings a sense of heritage, tactility, and quiet luxury to every space.

Yes. Our terracotta tiles are loved by interior designers, architects, and homeowners who value natural materials with timeless appeal. Whether used in contemporary spaces or traditional settings, they add texture, warmth, and authenticity — grounding modern interiors with enduring charm.

We don’t mass-produce. Every Maitland & Poate tile is handmade or reclaimed, created using traditional techniques that celebrate craftsmanship and material honesty. Each piece carries provenance and personality — crafted to bring understated distinction to your home.

Yes. Each terracotta tile is handmade by skilled artisans using time-honoured methods. We work closely with craftspeople who understand the rhythm and beauty of the material, ensuring every tile meets our standards of authenticity and enduring quality.

Yes — and that’s part of their character. Expect tonal shifts, subtle surface movement, and small irregularities that tell the story of their handmade origin. These variations aren’t imperfections, but the marks of genuine craftsmanship.

Yes. Terracotta is naturally porous and should be sealed to protect against moisture, staining, and wear. Proper sealing ensures your tiles remain both beautiful and practical for years to come.

Sealing & Installation

We recommend a breathable impregnating sealer such as Ecoprotec (or similar). Apply once the adhesive has dried and before grouting.

  • Allow the first coat to cure overnight.

  • Apply further coats every two hours until the tile reaches saturation (the sealer will begin to puddle — wipe away any excess).

  • After grouting and cleaning, apply one final coat for complete protection.

For a more traditional finish, boiled linseed oil or wax can be used to enhance colour and achieve a subtle sheen

Allow at least 24 hours after the final coat before walking on or using the tiled area to ensure full curing and long-term protection.

Care & Cleaning

Clean using a non-abrasive mop and pH-neutral cleaner. Ecoprotec offers a dedicated range of aftercare products, though any neutral product will help preserve the tile’s natural surface.

No. Harsh or acidic cleaners can damage both the finish and the seal, compromising the surface over time

Reseal every 1–2 years in high-traffic areas, or as needed, to maintain protection and colour depth. Over time, unsealed tiles will develop a soft patina — ageing gracefully, much like our reclaimed collections

Ecoprotec offers targeted stain removal products. For persistent marks, contact us for tailored advice.

Use felt pads under furniture, avoid dragging heavy objects, and consider rugs in high-traffic areas to protect the surface.

Regular cleaning with neutral products, avoiding harsh chemicals, and resealing as needed will keep your tiles looking beautifully aged yet refined
