Reclaimed Tiles FAQ
Reclaimed TIles
Our reclaimed tiles are authentic encaustic cement tiles, carefully salvaged from historic buildings across Spain and beyond. Each piece bears its own patina, markings, and gentle wear — a reflection of age, provenance, and craftsmanship. Unlike new tiles, no two are ever the same, bringing unmatched depth, character, and soul to your space.
Handmade tiles hold an artistry and individuality that machines can’t replicate. Every tile carries subtle irregularities, creating texture and personality underfoot. While machine-made tiles offer uniformity, handmade pieces add emotion and quiet luxury — the hallmarks of timeless design.
With proper installation and care, reclaimed tiles can last for generations — many already have. Sourced from centuries-old floors and walls, they continue to age beautifully, combining natural resilience with enduring elegance.
Absolutely. Our tiles are chosen by designers, architects, and homeowners who value authenticity in contemporary spaces. Whether complementing clean lines or layered into eclectic schemes, our collections add texture, warmth, and timeless integrity.
We don’t mass-produce. Each Maitland & Poate tile is either hand-restored from a historic site or handmade by artisans using time-honoured techniques. Every piece carries provenance, irregularity, and a sense of purpose — crafted to elevate interiors with quiet distinction.

Sealing & Installation
Yes. Like natural stone or terracotta, reclaimed encaustic tiles are microporous and should be sealed to protect against moisture and staining.
We recommend a breathable impregnating sealer, such as Ecoprotec (or a similar brand). Apply sealant once tiles and adhesive are dry, before grouting. The first coat should cure overnight, followed by additional coats every two hours until saturation. Once sealed, grout carefully, clean, and apply a final coat.
Yes. Choose from a natural matte, soft sheen, or high-gloss finish depending on the look you want to achieve.
Allow at least 24 hours after the final coat before walking on or using the area. This ensures the seal has cured for long-lasting protection.
Ordering, Samples & Delivery

Samples are representative, but variation is inherent to reclaimed materials. Subtle differences in tone and patina are part of their beauty — once laid, they create a layered, harmonious finish.

In-stock reclaimed tiles ship within 3–5 working days. If stock is held in Spain (noted on product pages), delivery is typically 3–4 weeks.

Care & Cleaning
Clean using a non-abrasive mop and pH-neutral products. Ecoprotec offers an excellent aftercare range, but any neutral cleaner will suffice.
No. Avoid harsh or acidic products, which can damage the tile surface and affect the sealer’s performance.
Resealing frequency depends on traffic and use. In high-traffic areas, reseal every 1–2 years. Even unsealed, reclaimed tiles will continue to age beautifully — it’s part of their story.
Use felt pads beneath furniture and avoid dragging heavy objects. Rugs can help protect high-traffic areas while adding warmth and texture.
Regular cleaning with neutral products and periodic resealing will maintain their surface. Avoid harsh chemicals to preserve the natural finish.
Yes. All our tiles are suitable for wet areas when properly sealed to prevent staining and ensure durability.
