From Passion to Purpose: The Story Behind Maitland & Poate
While renovating his Victorian home in London, Chris Maitland-Brooke became obsessed with finding tiles that had real soul—pieces with history, depth, and craftsmanship. When local reclamation yards fell short, his passion led to a bold decision: he moved to Spain with his wife and three young children in search of the real thing.
From forgotten farmhouses to sun-soaked courtyards, Chris uncovered tiles that told stories—and began restoring them by hand.
That love for design and heritage soon grew into a mission: to bring timeless, character-rich materials into modern interiors. Today, Chris leads Maitland & Poate with the same passion that started it all.

What started as a journey through Spain’s architectural heritage became a pursuit of rare, storied materials that redefine modern interiors. Sourcing reclaimed tiles from historic sites, collaborating with master artisans, we’ve built a brand rooted in heritage.
How It All Began
Like many good stories, it began with a renovation and an idea. Restoring our Victorian home in London, we sought materials with age and soul—but nothing matched the character we found in Spain.
So we turned to Andalucía, uncovering sun-washed tiles with a patina that couldn’t be faked. Word spread. Friends asked for help. Designers came next.
